Do the right things & Provide honest

“Do the right things.”

SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM LUCIAN LEAPE CONCERNING THE PUBLICATION OF “WHEN THINGS GO WRONG” IN JAPANESE

When a patient is harmed by our care, the right thing to do is to apologize and try to make amends. But doing the “right thing” can be difficult, particularly for the person who has made an error that caused the injury. In the complex world of modern medical care, the risk of iatrogenic injury is universal. So, too, the problems of providing honest and compassionate communication following a mishap know no national boundaries.

The purpose of this consensus statement from the Harvard hospitals is to give guidance and assistance to doctors and nurses who face this challenge, and to the institutions and their colleagues who must provide support.

We are pleased that this document will now be accessible to our Japanese friends and hope they will find it useful as they seek to provide thoughtful and compassionate responses to their patients who have been inadvertently injured.
